Walter ed Eve Mancini, una coppia in crisi, viaggiano in camper attraverso la California. Durante il tragitto, danno un passaggio ad Adam, un autostoppista che si rivela un violento rapinatore. Dopo aver aggredito la coppia, Adam viene ucciso da Eve. Ma il vero colpo di scena arriva quando Walter, attratto dal denaro del bandito, abbandona la moglie ferita, lasciandola morire.
