Mark, un ex agente segreto, torna a Berlino e scopre che la moglie Anna vuole lasciarlo. La donna sembra coinvolta in una relazione con un uomo eccentrico, Heinrich, ma ben presto emerge che Anna nasconde un segreto ancora più inquietante: una creatura mostruosa con cui ha un legame erotico e spirituale.  Halley, giovane e ribelle, cerca di sbarcare il lunario con mezzi discutibili, mentre il gestore del motel, Bobby (interpretato da Willem Dafoe), cerca di mantenere l'ordine e proteggere i bambini. Il film mostra il contrasto tra l'innocenza dell'infanzia e la dura realtà sociale, con uno stile realistico e toccante.
